OMIJA is a collective based in Busan, South Korea, composed of five “Mijas”: Park Mija, Yoo Mija, Lee Mija, Jung Mija, and Hwang Mija—four visual artists and one arboriculturist. Their practice explores the ecosystem as a dynamic process in which nature and humans continuously seek balance. For OMIJA, symbiosis is defined as “a fortuitous attraction born from arbitrary contact”—a relationship that begins with mutual benefit.

Roll

Roll is an instruction-based artwork created by the collective Omija as part of (re)connecting.earth. Inspired by historical artistic practices—particularly those of Fluxus, Marcel Duchamp, and Yoko Ono—these propositions shift the notion of the artwork toward a set of gestures, instructions, or situations to be activated.

In everyday life, instructions organize our actions and structure our ways of coexisting. With Roll, this logic is redirected toward contemporary concerns such as ecological transition and interspecies dialogue. The work invites us to imagine forms of interaction—both concrete and mental—with the beings, human and non-human alike, who share urban space.

Presented as posters or printed materials scattered throughout the exhibition and the city, these instructions act as triggers. They may evoke an emotion, initiate a performative action, or encourage the making of an object. The work is not limited to a material support; it exists through its activation by the public.

This format opens up an accessible space for experimentation, where anyone can appropriate and transform the proposal. In this sense, Roll moves beyond the notion of the art object to become a tool for reflection and exchange.

As part of this edition, many artists have developed instruction-based works, extending this format as a collective platform. These propositions serve as starting points for workshops, urban walks, and exchanges between artists, scientists, and audiences, affirming art as a space for relationship and action.
