A simple gesture: sorting screws. In the context of a participatory workshop, this mundane action becomes a collective experience that prompts reflection on the value of resources, attention and care. As part of the (re)connecting.earth (03) – Sensitive Resources Biennial, Echoes of Extraction invites participants to rethink the value of materials through a concrete and meditative gesture. Participants are invited to sort screws laid out in the centre of a table. Mixed together, they have no particular value; sorted and organised, they reveal their potential for reuse. This simple process becomes a metaphor for the resource cycle: how what we sort, repair or reuse can find a new place and purpose. The workshop opens with a shared reading on mineral extraction and the consumption of natural resources, before delving into a collective reflection on circularity and care economies, while offering a moment of slowness, attention and shared creation.
